The Enfield Cycle Company made motorcycles, bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines under the name Royal Enfield out of its works based at Redditch, Worcestershire. The sse of the brand name Royal Enfield was licensed by the Crown in 1890. Royal Enfield, the British brand under Indian ownership since 1949, built its first motorcycle as far back as 1901 when the company was known as the Enfield Cycle Company.
The oldest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, Royal Enfield is already selling bikes in various developed markets including the US, UK, Europe, Japan and Australia, besides foraying into the developing countries. Eicher Motors acquired Enfield India Ltd in 1994.
